  A RARE AND UNIQUE 19th century New Zealand Colonial marquetry inlaid oval centre table with moulded serpentine edge, extensive marquetry inlay predominantly of burr totara, saw tooth inlaid border, bizarre paua shell inlaid animal mask, open lower shelf and carved ball and claw feet with the most unusual casters my restorer has ever seen - probably home made.

Stamped makers mark to reverse for HW Smith together with pencilled date 1887.

An important 19th century New Zealand Colonial theatre make up cabinet with marquetry inlaid trompe l'oeil hinged cover enclosing a mirror, inset make up bowls and compartments above 2 short and 3 graduated burr elm long drawers with vari-coloured crossbanding and carved corbell supports, the sides carved with interlaced strap work; kauri carcass timber.

Provenance :
The work of Alfred Ingleson, scenic artist and property manager of many 19th century operatic and dramatic companies.

A 19thC New Zealand Rewa Rewa Wellington shape collector's chest with moulded edge, Kauri lined drawers and Burr Totara veneered fascia, two short and six long graduated drawers with turned knob handles and plinth base bearing pencilled inscription:

"Mr C J Johnson - Cabinet maker - Murphy, Turnbull Street, Wellington, New Zealand - June 1881."

  An Important New Zealand Interest mid 19th century mahogany secretaire campaign chest.
The secretaire drawer enclosing a fitted interior above three drawers on removable bun feet. 97cm wide x 45cm deep x 101cm high., (38.5" wide x 17.5" deep x 39.5" high.)
 

Provenance: This campaign chest was the property of Captain John Vander Host Rees 1834-1908. Served in New Zealand and was severely wounded in the Marori war at Waitara on 18 March 1861, he was rescued by Colour Sergent John Lucas of the 40th Regt (1st Battalion) South Lancashire Regiment, who was later awarded the Victoria Cross. The chest came back from New Zealand and resided at The Royal hospital Chelsea where Captain Rees became Captain of Invalids. Waitara was the first Taranaki war (1860-1861) Waitara is on the West cost of the North Island.

After leaving parliament Charles Bathurst, 1st Viscount Bledisloe, GCMG, KBE, PC (September 21, 1867 - July 3, 1958) was appointed Governor General of New Zealand, an office he held between 1930 and 1935. Lord Bledisloe was well known for promoting various causes including the Bledisloe cup rugby union competition between Australia and New Zealand which is currently contested annually
